Update: Network Access Control System Upgrade

All day today I’ve been working with an engineer from Bradford Networks. We’re preparing to move Network Sentry (Formerly known as Campus Manager) to a pair of new servers. Network Sentry controls access to our network. We planned for all of the work to be completed today, but moving our data and configuration to the new servers is taking longer than expected. Today’s expected interruption to the wireless network access did not occur. We are still running on the old servers.

We plan to attempt to finish the upgrade tomorrow afternoon starting at 1:00PM.

Postville Project presents at 2013 MAC Conference

In what already seems like a long time ago, Rachel, Sasha and I traveled to Indianapolis at the beginning of April to attend the 2013 Midwest Archives Conference. I had written a proposal way back in the fall hoping to present at the conference on the topic of documenting community tragedies and events as they happen.

Posted on the Google Apps Update Blog: 16 May 2013 05:50 PM PDT

Over the coming weeks, all Google Apps users get 30 GB of unified storage to use as you like between Drive and Gmail. This replaces the current replacing the current storage of 5 GB in Drive and 25 GB in Gmail. Just as before, files created in Docs, Sheets and Slides don’t count against your storage quota. Storage will also be shared with photos you upload to Google+ larger than 2048px.

New Google+ Hangouts

Google switched to a newer format to Google Plus a couple of days ago. This made our users see a red box that says “Unable to sign In :( Hangouts has not been enabled for your account. Please contact your administrator to enable this service.” and access to hangouts was effectively turned off for all users in our domain.

I have now enabled the new Hangouts for our domain.

Here are some of the features of the new Hangouts that Google lists:

Receive notifications across devices
Users will receive a notification across all of their devices when a message has been sent.

This Week in LIS - 17 May 2013

Headline of the Week: MOOC-based Graduate Degree in Computer Science from Georgia Tech

It was only October of last year I first mentioned MOOCs in a TWILIS headline. Luther’s Board of Regents had expressed interest and I had the opportunity to research the topic and share some thoughts.

Network Access Control System Upgrade

On Thursday, May 23, LIS will be upgrading our Network Access Control System. This work will begin at 9 a.m. and is expected to be completed by early to mid afternoon. During this time, users may be unable to connect to the LCWireless and LCWireless5G networks. The LCGuest wireless network and the Wired network will remain available during the upgrade.

Are MOOCs the solution? Or just the perpetuation of a hierarchical model of education?

All of us have heard or read something about MOOCs recently. MOOCs are, for some, the future of higher education, for others, it’s a phenomenon that needs to be carefully scrutinized. Aaron Bady writes an interesting evaluation of this phenomenon. The section IV of the article is the one who resonates the most with me.
