This Week in LIS - 11 May 2012

Headline of the Week: IT Risk

For the past several weeks a sub-team of LIS has been looking at some security issues; a specific focus has been on virus scanning on campus. Another group has been providing information as input into a discussion about coverage for cyber liability. An additional piece of work was done to package together a set of IT risk mitigation tools and projects. This was presented to the Cabinet on Monday. Why is there such a focus on security and risk management? What is behind this?

I see two important driving factors.

This week’s Suggestion of the Week appearing on the LIS digital sign in the library :

Suggestion: “It would be nice to have more outlets in the library.”

If there is a particular area where you think an additional outlet would be especially handy, let us know. Send a suggestion to library@luther.edu and we’ll check to see if placing an outlet in that location is feasible.”

"Book-em, Danno"

Hi, I’m Bob and I’m a recovering “paper” book reader. I have tons of “pbooks” laying around the house, having long ago overflowed the banks of our various bookshelves and things that remotely resemble bookshelves. Pbooks possess a lot of character I find missing in an ebook…

Why You Should Care About Google+

What is Google+ anyway? I don’t have time for this. Another social network? * sigh * I’m still getting used to Facebook’s timeline thing.

Do the comments above sound like things you or colleagues have said in recent months?

If so, we get it. Technology changes at such a rapid pace that sometimes it can be hard to keep up and it can be hard to want to. Additionally, you may view social media as a way of connecting with friends, rather than colleagues.
