Partial Network Outage in Library during 8/25/08 Olin Power Outage

Facilities is planning a power outage in Olin Hall on Monday, August 25th from 12:30 p.m.. – 5:00 p.m.. Network in the Library has traditionally been dependent on the network in Olin being up. This is now only partially true. The wireless network, and wired computers that have IP addresses that start with 10 (mostly only the lab, I think) will continue to work. Computers that still have IP addresses that begin 172.17 on the wired network will not have network service during the Olin power outage.

The OSPF dynamic routing that our campus LAN uses has potential for redundant links, and last spring we began preparing to add one with the addition of new fiber from Sampson to Olin and from Olin to the Library.

Having heard of the upcoming power outage only yesterday, this morning we connected a second uplink between the Library switch and the Sampson switch, and tested that traffic from the library network (computers with 10.x.x.x addresses only) will make use of it. Due to the short notice, however, it will not be feasible to switch all of the computers with 172.17.x.x addresses to having 10.x.x.x addresses prior to the power outage.
