How to find articles from the new Library Research site

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

Several people have asked about how to find articles from journals using the new Library Research website. Let me count the ways:

1) Using Encore, our new research and discovery tool. The Research page uses Encore as its default search. Along with searching Magnus (the library’s online catalog) if you enter a search term in the Encore search box (and you are on campus) that term is also sent to the Academic Search Complete, JSTOR and Project Muse databases. The results of this article search can be found in the lower right hand corner of the Encore results page under the heading Research Pro. You will see a link that says “Show online database results.” Click here and you will see links to results from each database. In addition to these three databases the Encore search will also send your search term to Google and Google Book Search. If you are off campus Encore will only return the results from Google and Google Book Search.

2) Using the All Databases list. A short distance down from the Search button on the Research page you will see a link to “All Databases.” This is similar to the A to Z list of databases that we maintained on the old library web page. You should be able to find your favorite databases in this list as before.

3) Using Resources by Area of Study. First in the left hand column of the Research page is a box containing the Resources by Area of Study pull down menu. That menu contains links to separate pages of resources, including article databases, relevant to each of the College’s majors and programs. Simply select a subject and you bring up a page that includes, in many cases, a list of subject specific databases as well as potentially useful general databases.

4) Using Resources by Type. Directly under the Resources by Area of Study box is a box containing a pull down menu for Resources by Type. One of the choices in that menu is “Databases and Indexes” which will lead you to the same list that you will find by clicking on All Databases as mentioned in 2 above.

These are only some of the ways to use the Library Research site to discover journal articles. Hopefully this helps answer a few of the questions we have been hearing.
