User Services Meeting - 10/6/09

- Recycling – September 24th we had Midwest Electronic Recovery come to campus to pick up a truckload of old equipment for recycling. To learn more and see pictures, go to Recycling of Equipment within LIS
- Power outage – During the September 23rd power outage in the library, the Help Desk moved to Olin and continued to provide service until 7:30 pm that evening when power was restored and they returned to the library. Flashlights have been purchased that will reside on each floor of the library and also in Main.
- Homecoming – All of our checkout equipment (laptops, projectors, and carts) was in use over the homecoming weekend and the cart system that was implemented this past year worked well. Thanks go to Matt H, Matt B, Lynnette, and Bob E.
- Adobe Presenter – Will purchase 5 licenses, pilot use of the product this fall, and reassess in the spring whether this should be part of the faculty/staff and lab images.
- RTR – Agreed deep freeze should be applied in the Olin RTR to assure on reboot computers are reset to the image settings. Will confirm with others in LIS.
- Video Editing Course Location – Discussed options for a video editing course that will be held Spring 2010.
- Main 113/114 – Memory in these computers was doubled from 512MB to 1G and the difference has been noticeable.
- Classroom Control Systems – Hardware vs software solutions will be discussed at the next User Services meeting.
- Lab Request – Decided 4 used computers will be placed in Valders 347, the Test library. They will have the lab image.
- Printers – How many personal printers do we have that work, that don’t work, where do we store them, and what do we want to do with them? Will continue the conversation at the next User Services meeting.
- Wireless Presenters – Requests have been received for devices in Olin 102, Valders 206, and Peace. Larry and Matt H will review options and bring recommendations to the next User Services meeting.
- GusDay – Set for Friday, December 4th at Carleton. Presentations proposals are to be submitted by October 31st. See GusDay10 Call for Presentations
- EDUCAUSE 2009 – “Online Conference: Bringing You Options” is available and Luther has registered. Mark your calendars for November 4-6 in the Olin RTR and stay tuned for more information.
- Social Networking – Ryan will be presenting at the Oct 14/15 staff meetings on “Social Networking: a look at how web tools like Facebook and Twitter are being used for personal and professional communication”.
