Today’s issue of the Chronicle’s Wired Campus email mentions that Amherst College is starting an open-access, all digital academic press, housed in the library. Here’s a link to the announcement by Amherst’s Librarian, Bryn Geffert.

Excited that this is a growing trend

I really love hearing about publishing projects like this in libraries, it’s an assertive, productive response to traditional business models in the field that are becoming unsustainable. It’s an opportunity for us to be able to directly enable creation and distribution of relevant content instead of viewing ourselves as victims of vendors.

Along those lines, I particularly enjoy the following quote from Geffert, “It’s time for libraries to begin producing for themselves what they can no longer afford to purchase and what they can no longer count on university presses to produce.”
