This workshop seeks to provide an introduction to the “hidden” cultural heritage of northeast Iowa and archaeology’s role in revealing it. The workshop will be largely experiential in nature, with participants working alongside students in the field and lab components of Luther’s archaeological field school. The field and lab activities, along with associated readings, will provide an overview of indigenous occupations in the area, long-term patterns in the human use of the local landscape, and the data and methods available to investigate these issues. The experience will also provide the opportunity to informally discuss topics such as the participation of students in faculty research, conducting research at small schools, interdisciplinary endeavors, epistemology, and connecting local research to larger issues. The field component will consist of 1½ days of physical activity at the field site in Allamakee County without access to modern amenities. The remaining half day will be spent on campus in the Anthropology Laboratory.
