Participants: The workshop is highly recommended for any faculty teaching Paideia I or II for the first time, but we also encourage faculty to attend who are teaching in either course and wish to improve their effectiveness as writing teachers. Limit: 15.
The teaching of writing in both Paideia I and Paideia II poses a challenge for many teachers, because their preparation in graduate school contained little intentional attention to theories of writing, let alone any particular pedagogy for the teaching of writing. This problem is aggravated by the unspoken assumptions about student writing that we bring to the task—assumptions we’ve acquired through our own practice and whatever models of writing instruction we may have had as undergraduates or graduate students. This workshop focuses on three basic elements that both Paideia I and Paideia II teachers need to understand and incorporate into their practice as writing teachers: the writing process itself (with special attention to how students revise); creating assignments that will ask students to discover their ideas as they complete the task; evaluating student writing with clarity, consistency, and sufficient encouragement to help students continue to improve. Since Paideia I and Paideia II courses typically engage students in writing about texts, we will emphasize text-based, analytical writing in our examples and conversation.
