E-Reading Activities in J-Term
During J-Term 2013, LIS invites members of the Luther community to explore the boundaries and freedom of e-reading through a variety of activities, including:
- Workshops: All workshops will consist of a demonstration/presentation of approximately 30 minutes followed by open time for people to ask questions, try out different e-readers and applications, and receive one-on-one assistance from LIS staff. If participants have e-readers or tablets, they are encouraged to bring them. See the LIS Training Schedule for dates, times, and locations.
- Be the Library: How to Lend Your Own E-Books
Learn about the various online platforms that enable the borrowing and lending of e-books by individual Nook & Kindle e-book owners. Demonstrations will be given of the top services, including a review of the benefits and limitations of each. - Get Inside E-Books in Your Library
With one simple click, you can purchase e-books from various vendors, but do you know how to access e-books from your local library? This workshop will review the steps to enabling e-reading from academic collections here at Preus as well as popular reading materials available from Decorah Public Library. - E-Reading on Your Tablet Using a tablet like an iPad for your e-reading opens up a world of possibilities in terms of the various apps you can use to organize your e-book collection and annotate the text of individual e-books. At this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn about the features of some of the top e-reading apps and how you can take advantage of them!
- Be the Library: How to Lend Your Own E-Books
- Virtual E-Book Club: Care to start the new year with a very different book club? Join fellow members of the Luther community in reading Thomas More’s classic Utopia via a new online platform, where everyone reads from the same e-book text. Group members will be able to highlight and annotate with one another, carrying on conversations within the book itself! Participants will be organized into a Google Group for outside of book conversation and everyone will be invited to a face-to-face gathering at the end of the month to discuss the experience. To participate, e-mail Jennifer Rian (rianje01).
- E-Book Challenge: Log every e-book you reading during the month here. Each new book counts as an entry in our J-Term E-Reading Contest. Entries may begin January 2nd.
- E-Reading Contest: The more you participate in our activities this month, the greater your chances to win our Grand Prize—a Kobo-Mini E-Reader, generously donated by Dragonfly Books! Participating in the virtual book club, attending a workshop, logging a book read in the challenge. . .all actions count as entries in the contest. The winner will be selected via random drawing Monday, January 28th. Results will be announced on Preus Library’s Facebook page and the winner will be notified via Norse Mail.
