Recruitment: Web Programmer/Analyst
Luther College is seeking a self-motivated, detail-oriented programmer analyst to provide application support for information systems. The successful applicant will join our Application Development team within Library and Information Services.
Knowledge of procedural computer languages and experience using SQL and relational databases is required. Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience is preferred. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills and analytical skills. Also, technical knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, network interfaces, open source LAMP, and Microsoft SQLserver is preferred.
This full-time, benefits-eligible position is within Library and Information Services (LIS), an integrated information service organization delivering library and information technology based service to the faculty, students, and administration of Luther College. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The Web Programmer Analyst designs and develops software applications, supports the database, web servers, and network infrastructure for vendor-supplied and in-house developed systems. Responsibilities include developing web-based software applications and system interfaces for a variety of databases and openLDAP. This person will work with the Application Development and Network and Systems teams in Library and Information Services to provide technical support for vendor supplied and internally developed software systems.
- Provides technical support and web-interface development for the CBORD campus card and housing management system. Communicates with vendors, LIS Network and Systems team and Application Development team. (ie. develop web based meal-plan signup). Maintains operating systems for Micros and Odyssey servers.
- Provides software development and maintenance of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and Perl/PHP/Python) applications including the Academic Planning Committee course planning and proposal application, campus and alumni directory applications.
- Provides LAMP programming, database, and server support to the Reason Content Management System, especially in the setup of the e-commerce solution using PayPal.
- Provides support for Nebraska Book, point of sale system for the Luther Bookshop (Microsoft SQL Server).
- Assists the Luther College Office for Financial Services in monitoring Payment Card Industry PCI compliance.
- Provides support for Titanium Schedule, counseling center management software (Microsoft SQL Server).
- Provides technical support for the AdAstra facilities management software (Microsoft SQL Server) and web server. Provides communication with vendor, LIS Network and Systems team and Application Development team.
- Provides support for SmartCatalog server, software and user setup.
- Has general knowledge of Datatel software, data structures, custom computed columns for data retrieval and Query Builder reporting as it pertains to data transfers and integration with auxiliary systems.
- Assists users in querying and reporting information from database systems using the appropriate reporting tool (often SQL language). A variety of reporting tools are available such as Crystal Reports to query vendor-supplied databases.
- Prepares instructional documentation, training and consultation for users on software application use. Prepares internal technical documentation for LIS on software and system installation, annual maintenance, trouble-shooting problems, and on-going support.
- Assists in the enhancement and maintenance of existing databases and of appropriate security measures for user setup and access to sensitive data.
- Assists Network and Systems team with some scheduled on-call systems support outside of normal business hours.
- Assists in research and system development for web applications and interfaces to database systems and OpenLDAP.
- Participates with the Director of Information Systems and the Application Development team in the establishment of priorities of application development projects.
- Participates with the Director of Information Systems, Network and Systems team, and the Application Development team in long and short range planning for systems and network infrastructure needs, services, and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications
- Education and knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in computer science strongly preferred.
- Experience: System analysis, web-based application programming, and systems programming. Must have knowledge of relational databases and web or structured or object oriented programming languages.
- Must have advanced analytical and problem solving skills. Requires considerable judgment to work independently toward general results, devising methods, modifying or adapting standard procedures to meet different conditions.
- Requires working with confidential data, checking for accuracy of data that is critical to the business of the college, and attention to detail in testing applications before placing an application in production use.
- Requires organization, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently and with a project team.
- While performing the duties of this job, this employee is sitting most of the time, but duties may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time; includes exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or the ability to lift, carry, push or pull or otherwise move objects with a negligible amount of force.
- Atmosphere or environment provide pleasant, smoke free, air conditioned in summer and comfortably warm in winter.
