LIS Web Services: Encore
What is Encore?
Encore is a new way to discover library materials that includes the following new features in our online catalog:
- a single search box (a la Google)
- the ability to refine searches on-the-fly by multiple parameters
- dynamically-generated tag clouds pulled from subject information
- intelligent suggestions for mistyped or fuzzy searches (did you mean …)
- highlights of popular choices and recent additions
- relevance ranking
- federated search integration
Where did Magnus go?
Magnus, our online catalog is still available and will continue to offer its own interface and search. When choosing an advanced search from our Encore search, you are taken to our Magnus advanced search allowing a wider range of definable search criteria. Encore is a discovery tool that floats above our catalog, providing innovative and useful access tools for users. Magnus remains our catalog and data source for both Magnus and Encore searches.
What is in Encore?
The primary and featured information source in Encore is our online library catalog, Magnus that contains records for all physical materials available for use in Luther collections, as well as records for online journals and other electronic data sources. Encore also incorporates a portion of our service Research Pro, a federated search tool, that integrates search results from Google, JSTOR, Project Muse, and Academic Search Complete right alongside your Magnus results.
How do I use Encore?
Using Encore is as simple as using an Internet search engine. Just type in terms or words that you are researching and your results will be returned. You can limit your search using facets which appear on the left side of the page, or by subject using the tag cloud on the right side of the page. Each item record also links to the full record available in Magnus. To view search results for the same terms from Research Pro, click the link under the Research Pro section on the right side of the page.
