Reserves (KATIE, eReserves, and Physical Reserves)

LIS offers assistance in providing access to readings and other materials (sound recordings, videos, etc.) that support the instructional requirements for specific courses. This is done through the KATIE learning management system, eReserves, and physical reserves.

KATIE:

LIS recommends KATIE as the preferred method for handling eReserves.

Rationale:

  • All regular course sections automatically have a KATIE course site created for them allowing instructors to link course resource documents(such as scanned articles or pages from a book), full-text documents from the library’s article databases, or any other material available on the network or the Web.
  • There is no real differentiation between the type of resources traditionally used for eReserves and those made available on KATIE.
  • Statistics indicate students regularly use KATIE to access course resources.
  • KATIE affords the added benefit of limiting access to the resource material to students with a legitimate academic purpose (only those enrolled in the course), a factor in complying with the library’s Copyright Fair Use guidelines.

If an instructor is uncomfortable with any of the steps involved in linking resources to KATIE, LIS staff is available to assist with the conversion of single-sided copies to usable digital format (usually, Adobe pdf) so instructors or their assistants can post them to their KATIE course site.

Upon request, LIS staff will handle the actual posting of converted documents and Web links directly to the instructor’s KATIE site.

eReserves:

For those who request it, Preus Library will continue to offer an electronic reserve system (eReserves) through the library Web site that includes both scanned pages and links to full-text articles available through its subscription databases.

Instructors should allow 48 hours for processing; single-sided photocopies are preferred for scanning purposes.

Physical reserves:

Preus Library also operates a physical reserve system behind the circulation desk. Typical items include books, videos, CDs, and photocopies. Unless otherwise requested, items on reserve circulate under a 2-hour-loan, in-library-use-only policy.

Instructors should allow 24 hours for processing.
