Mott and Borlaug Podiums Upgraded

The two podium computers in Mott and Borlaug have been upgraded from Dell Optiplex GX280s to Dell Optiplex 760s. The network connections the two computers use have also been switched from wireless to wired.

  • Insight Demo – Demonstration of Faronics Insight classroom control system (http://www.faronics.com/html/Insight.asp) is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22nd at 1 p.m for faculty who use M113 and M114.
  • LIS Mixer – Reviewed plans for the October 1st gathering intended to introduce LIS student workers and staff to each other.
  • LIS Website Upgrade – Ready for testing of Drupal 6, the new version of the software running the LIS website. More information regarding the URL for testing will be forthcoming.

Luther College's local access cable TV channel has moved.

Due to changes by Media Comm this week, I have had to move our local access cable TV channel from channel 23 to channel 17.

  • Move-In Day Report – Helping first-year students get on ResNet went smoothly over the weekend. There were fewer questions on Saturday (only 50ish) and many more questions on Sunday than in the past. Help Desk has been busy, but not overwhelmed, since then and primarily with upperclass students.

Sophos Version 7.0 for Macs

Sophos for Mac has been upgraded from 4.9 to 7.0 on sophos.luther.edu. We have updated the website with new links.
This update will be installed automatically. The shield will turn from blue to black when the update is complete.

Sophos 7.0 is for Mac OSX 10.4 and newer. Older versions are no longer supported.

Sophos for Windows is not affected by this update.

  • Collaboration – Discussed participation in this year’s Professional Development Inservice Day for the Decorah Schools. Luther has participated the last two years and will do so again this year.
  • Start of School – Reviewed the status of several projects in preparation for the start of the fall semester, including:
    • Service Points – Help Desk Call Center completion, Library Lab move, and Reference Desk / Help Desk move are ready and waiting for the final steps from Facilities.

  • Staff Appreciation Day – Wednesday, August 12th.
  • Schedules – Reviewed who’s in/out during August.
  • TrackIt – Shared feedback from the weekend’s upgrade and next steps for TrackIt which include the implementation of Self Service for the Luther community this fall.
  • Cable chain key locks – Decided to purchase cable chain key locks for labs with LCD monitors.
  • Recycling Day – We’re creating a list of all copiers, printers, faxes and anything that can produce an image to be recycled this fall.

LIS Work Order System Upgrade

This past weekend, LIS upgraded Track-It! which is the system we use for work orders, purchasing, inventory, and software.

As a result, when a work order is entered into the Help Desk system on your behalf you will receive an e-mail confirming your request. In addition, you will also receive an e-mail when your work order is closed.

KACE KBOX Agent Identified by Sophos Anti-Virus

This morning, Sophos Anti-Virus began flagging an application called ‘KACE KBOX’ as a suspicious file. This file is safe.

LIS is pushing the KACE KBOX agent to all Luther workstations in order to better utilize new technologies for the upcoming school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Help Desk at x1000.
