Internet Maintenance Friday 3/12/10 from midnight until 6AM

Tomorrow morning (3/12/10) from midnight until 6AM Mediacom will be performing maintenance on their network infrastructure. Since Luther has a redundant internet connection from 3 different ISP’s, our internet service will remain functional during this maintenance. Having our connection to Mediacom down will reduce our bandwidth to the Internet for the duration of the maintenance. Users may notice slower than usual Internet connectivity during this time.

Eaglecam Restrictions Imposed

We have apparently been able to limit incoming traffic to the Eaglecam to only those connections originating from the official link: http://www.luther.edu/eaglecam. Since numerous urls were posted and harvested by Google there are a lot of rejections occurring at the Streaming Server which should continue until those interested get directed to Luther’s gateway to the popular site.

Internet Outage

10:00am – Internet service has been restored. Please contact the Technology Help Desk with any further issues.

Connections to the Internet outside of Luther are currently experiencing troubles. This affects the entire campus. On campus websites (Katie, My.Luther, etc) are unaffected.

LIS is looking into the issue and hopes to have it resolved soon.

Internet Maintenance at 6AM on 2/12/10

I’m going to take our Internet connection down to upgrade the firmware on our routers tomorrow (2/12/10) at 6AM. There will be some interruptions in internet service during the maintenance. I expect to have the maintenance completed by 7AM.

This maintenance is needed to fix the issue that caused today’s internet problems and ensure that this problem doesn’t occur again.

Internet Trouble

We’re currently having trouble with our routing to the internet, and internet service is down. I’m working to get service restored asap. I will post updates here as I have them.

Update Service is restored for now, but we may have trouble again as what we have found and solved so far is not a complete fix.

LDAP Down for Maintenance - 11:20am Tuesday

At 11:20am today (Tuesday), LIS will take down the LDAP Authentication server for emergency maintenance. This outage is expected to last approximately 15 minutes.

During this time, users will be unable to log into workstations, network drives, and many Luther services. Datatel and Norse Mail will not be effected. Users that are currently logged in should experience no troubles.

Contact the Technology Help Desk at x1000 with any questions.

Windows 7 and Norse Key Authentication

LIS has been piloting Microsoft’s newest operating system, Windows 7, which is the successor to Windows Vista. Due to the deep tie that Windows 7 would have to our Norse Key authentication system, we have put the Windows 7 project on hold as we determine options for Norse Key authentication systems first.

We currently use OpenLDAP for our Norse Key authentication system and are comparing our current system to other options to determine what infrastructure makes sense as we continue to move forward.

Olson Hall Wireless Problems Resolved

Recently students in Olson Hall have been reporting that the wireless network will suddenly become very weak or non existent in an area of the building. I have been working with the manufacturer of the wireless equipment to resolve this problem. They have given me new software to run on the access points. We believe this new software will fix this problem.

Upgraded Wireless Network in Olson

The wireless network in Olson has been upgraded. This upgrade replaces previously spotty coverage with full coverage throughout the entire building. This upgrade also is our first use of 802.11N and 802.11A technology. The wireless access points in Olson support 802.11A, 802.11B, 802.11G, and 802.11N wireless network technologies. 802.11N allows wireless network connections with speeds as fast as 300Mbps.

The Olson wireless network makes use of a new type of access points that we have not used before on campus.
