MLA Annual Meeting, 2009

A couple weeks ago, I attended the annual meeting of the Music Library Association, which was held in Chicago. This was my first time going to MLA, and I’m happy to report that it exceeded all of the excellent hype I have heard about it over the last 15 years.

Text a Call Number From Magnus

Have you ever found yourself without a piece of paper or a pen after finding a call number in the library catalog?

Now, if you are searching in Magnus, you can send a text message to your phone which will include the title, author and call number for your book.

Just click the “Send via Text Message” button found in the middle of most Magnus item displays (here’s an example), then enter your phone number and select your cell provider — it’s that simple!

The texting service is available for the following cell providers:

  • Alltel
  • AT&T/Cin

Create a Citation in Magnus

Magnus now has the ability to display example citations for many of the books, journals, videos, and music in the Luther Library Collection.

When looking at a full item record in Magnus (here’s an example), on many records you will now see a link immediately below title and imprint information, labeled “Cite this Item (from WorldCat).” Example citations will be given in the following formats:

  • APA
  • Chicago (Author-Date)
  • Harvard
  • MLA
  • Turabian

“Cite this Item” is provided by OCLC, and is also available from WorldCat.org

JSTOR Arts & Sciences VI Collection now available

Luther College now has access to the content of journals included in JSTOR’s Arts & Sciences VI Collection.

“With a minimum of one hundred twenty (120) titles, the Arts & Sciences VI Collection will extend JSTOR’s coverage in disciplines across the social sciences, with clusters focused in economics, education, linguistics, political science, and area studies.”

Here is a list of the new titles currently available (http://www.jstor.org/action/showJournals?browseType=collectionInfoPage&s...), more will be added during 2009-2010.
