Library professional staff meeting 10-6-08

LIBRARY PROFESSIONAL STAFF MEETING

October 6, 2008, 9:15 a.m., Hovde

Present: Chris, Andi, Ryan, John, Jane, Lindy, Germano, Rebecca, Rachel.

All the librarians gave individual reports regarding (a) orientations to the new Library Research website for departments and (b) library instruction, past, present and future. Are having good results for the most part.

Andi then discussed the Paideia I Open Unit and the Spring Research Unit. Research dates are February 16-March 6.

LIBRARY PROFESSIONAL STAFF MEETING

Present: Chris, Andi, Ryan, John, Jane, Lindy, Germano, Rebecca, Rachel.

Librarians gave reports regarding meetings with their departments on the orientation to the new library research website. Let Andi know when visits have been made. All also reported regarding library instruction.

Discussion on the Paideia I Open Unit as to available space, equipment needs, etc.

Jane gave a reminder about the MUSTY Project. Reviewed the area each had done last year.

Presentation in the Iowa Communication Association Annual Conference

Last Friday I had the opportunity to participate in the G. Jon Hall Online Gift Forum, in Waterloo, IA. The Forum was part of the 44th Annual Conference of the Iowa Communication Association. The title of my presentation was “Internet in the Classroom: How to make the best use of it.” The internet creates an enormity of new ways to access information, interact with others, or to have fun. Students, most of the time, do not think about the consequences of appropriating the information the web offers.

Present: Germano, Rebecca, Jane, Ryan, Andi, Rachel, Lindy, Chris, John

Librarians reported on their contacts with their liaison departments regarding the new website. Already completed or scheduled departments include Pol. Sci, Religion, Women & Gender Studies, E&B, ThD, Modern Lang., Art, Africana Studies, History. Other departments are in the works.

Ryan’s J-term course was presented at the Science div.

  • Campus-wide Staff Meetings – First staff meetings of the year are Sept 17 at 2:00 and Sept 18 at 9:00. Try to attend one or the other.
  • XP/Vista Faculty/Staff Images – Images are being updated ahead of the staff roll which starts Monday, Sept 22nd. Send all thoughts/comments to Larry regarding the image. He will have a machine available for review later this week.

LIBRARY PROFESSIONAL STAFF MEETING

Jane reported on the Department Heads Meeting. Vitas should be sent to Janine Brandt soon. Reviewed the faculty development opportunities list and encouraged everyone to attend the brown bag session this Wednesday.

Jane gave a report on delinquent faculty overdues from 2007-08. Then handed out the lost books lists from 2007-08 to each librarian for their departments.

LIBRARY PROFESSIONAL STAFF MEETING

Andi has met with Dana Fine, our intern for the fall semester. She gave out the proposed internship schedule for meeting with everyone. We will be running on the old model. Will talk with staff before sending out the final version. She then spoke on how Library instruction has been going so far. Others told of sessions they have and will be doing. Andi reminded everyone to use the form in reporting on sessions and give to her at the end of the semester.

Society of American Archivists conference report

I was at the Society of American Archivists meeting in San Francisco last week. My first day was filled with meetings. I have just been named the District 6 Rep on the Membership committee, so I am in charge of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois.

LIBRARY PROFESSIONAL STAFF MEETING

August 26, 2008, 9:00 a.m., Hovde

Present: Chris, Andi, John, Jane, Lindy, Germano, Rebecca.

Welcome to our new colleague, Rebecca Sullivan.
Time and place set for professional staff meetings.
Reviewed the calendar of upcoming dates.
Everyone gave a short summary of their professional activities done over the summer.

John gave a demo on the new LIS website and Encore.

Germano discussed the Reference Desk schedules (daily and weekend). Sheets are being routed for signing up for hours each will work.
