LIST Meeting 4/4/2011

Food/ Drink Proposal: Rachel, representing the Library Food & Drink committee (Rachel, Matt H., Germano ), announced that the committee is ready to propose some recommendations. The committee will present the recommendations at the LIS general meeting on Wednesday, April 6. Rachel shared the ideas that are under consideration.

ACRL reflections: Andi, Ryan, Germano, and John gave their impressions of the ACRL conference they attended March 30- April 2.

  • Admissions Visit Day – LIS will be hosting an open house in the library for admitted students and their parents on Friday, April 15th from 11:00-12:00 as part of the Admissions Admitted Student Visit Day.

TG 150: John distributed a list of ideas he had created regarding library initiatives and TG 150. Points of discussion followed from that list, including “just in time” vs. “just in case” collection development for both journal articles and books. The ability to produce “print on demand” from digitized works exists (some discussion of Expresso, a book making machine). An increase in e-book purchase and use is expected, although some students are reluctant to use e-books.

  • GusDay – GusDay is tomorrow (Friday, March 18) at Bethel University. Several from LIS will be attending and Matt Hammen will be co-presenting with Carleton on software distribution management through the KBOX. In addition, many LISers are at ILA/ACRL tomorrow at Central College in Pella.
  • Spring Break – Over break next week, the Deep Freeze client will be updated on the lab workstations.

TG 150: The content of the Luther College TG 150 Planning and Positioning document will be placed on the IDEAS website for input from individuals. The sustainability of Luther’s budget by 2014 is a concern of TG 150. LIST discussion stemmed from the ideas presented in the TG 150 document relating to online courses, the faculty/staff/ student ratios, and income generation by LIS.

Rebecca reminded us to communicate with our liaison departments to let them know that new software requests are due by the end of April.

Changes to Ebsco databases: Ryan has updated Ebsco databases so there is better linking to external content. For example, if an item is cited in Ebsco, and the full text of the article is available in JSTOR, there should be a link in Ebsco that will lead to the full text in JSTOR.

User Services Meeting - 2/16/11

  • Domain and Windows 7 – LIS will be setting up a complete test environment for the transition to the new domain in order for the transition, which is slated for this coming summer, to be as smooth as possible for the Luther community.
  • Hard Drive Encryption – LIS is researching options for encrypting the hard drives of Windows workstations to enhance security of Luther-owned devices, particularly laptops.
