A reminder to all campus community members of the invitation to attend EDUCAUSE 2009 Online events, being held in Olin 301 this Wednesday – Friday. A full schedule of events appears at the bottom of this message. Feel free to attend any or all events!

LIS General Meeting for November - Special Event

In lieu of our normal LIS General meeting for November (next Wednesday November 4), we will meet in the Olin Round Table room to participate in a live video event from EDUCAUSE 2009 in Denver. The session will be Collaboration Is Strategy led by Brad Wheeler, the Vice President for IT, CIO and Professor at Indiana University.

His talk will begin at 9:15. Refreshments will be available in the 3rd Floor faculty lounge.

Attend EDUCAUSE 2009 Online

EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. Each Fall, EDUCAUSE hosts a conference bringing together classroom teachers, librarians, administrators, and IT professionals to consider current challenges and share recent successes.

This year EDUCAUSE is offering a portion of the conference online, and LIS is inviting the Luther community to join us in attending

The online conference will take place from Nov. 4-6, in Olin 301 (Round Table Room). Below is a listing of sessions.

Invitation to Preus Library's 40th Anniversary Celebration

Everyone is invited to a Homecoming Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Preus Library on Saturday, October 3rd in Hovde Lounge, 3:00 – 5:00 pm. Join us at 3:30 pm to hear David Hovde, son of former Head Librarian Oivind Hovde and librarian at Purdue University, speak briefly about his father and the building of the library. Christopher Barth, Executive Director of Library and Information Services, will follow with comments about the future of libraries.

Reception for David Esslemont

Join us for an artist reception for David Esslemont, award-winning British artist, on Wednesday, September 30th from 3:30-5:30pm in Hovde Lounge.

Esslemont now lives in Iowa and works from his studio north of Decorah. “I am passionate about books – my aim is to make books that are not only a pleasure to read, but a delight to all the senses.”

The exhibit, “David Esslemont: Artist, Designer, Printer, Bookbinder” can be viewed on the third floor of Preus Library until October 16th.

LIS Forum: MISO Student Survey Presentation

As part of her work this summer for LIS, Christina Knudson has done some statistical analysis of our student MISO survey. She will share a few of her findings this Wednesday at 9:00 in Hovde Lounge. Anyone with interest is welcome to attend … it is not mandatory, and should last less than an hour.

Planning Day Readings

At this week’s LIS annual planning day we’ll be spending some time thinking about the future of our work in the context of the future of higher ed. The following two articles have just recently been published and offer some views on the challenges ahead. As you can imagine, technology is a huge driver in the current evolution of education and pedagogy, and as a result, LIS does and should have a role to play.

Preus Library dedication celebration

Join us for a campus-wide informal celebration of the 40th anniversary of the dedication of Preus Library on Monday, May 11. May 11th marks the actual anniversary of the building’s dedication. We’ll be serving cake and lemonade from 3-4:30 p.m. in Hovde Lounge. A formal event in recognition of the library’s 40 years of service to the Luther campus and the work of librarians past and present will be observed during the 2009 Homecoming celebration.

IAICU Technology Conference Announced

IAICU has announced their Spring Technology Conference 2009. It will be held June 11-12, 2009 (begins noon Thurs. & ends 1 p.m. Fri.) at Morningside College Campus in Sioux City, IA.

The theme will be CSI: Collaboration, Sharing, and Investigation Plan to attend for an opportunity to investigate, share and collaborate with colleagues about the delivery of IT services in colleges and universities.

They are in the initial stages of planning and welcome suggestions for topics and speakers.
