Service Interruptions

I am planning to upgrade our campus firewall tomorrow morning starting at about 5:30AM. Work will be complete before 7:30AM. This upgrade is necessary because our current firewall will not have enough capacity to handle our new faster Internet connection when it becomes fully loaded. Internet access will NOT be available during the upgrade. Users on campus WILL be able to access servers that are on campus during the upgrade.

Facilities is planning a power outage in Valders on Friday, August 22nd from 8:00 a.m. – noon. With no power the network in Valders will be down at the same time.

Facilities is planning a power outage in Olin Hall on Monday, August 25th from 12:30 p.m.. – 5:00 p.m.. With no power the network in Olin will be down at the same time.

Yesterday afternoon an e-mail was sent to people with Luther addresses with the subject “Verify Your Account.” This is a phishing scam and should be ignored.

As a reminder, LIS will never ask you for your password or any other information like this in an unsolicited e-mail. If you are ever unsure about the authenticity of an e-mail message, forward it to helpdesk@luther.edu.

As a result of network address changes, access to licensed database resources currently travels through our campus proxy server. All services are available, and will remain available. Users will just need to enter their Norse Key to be connected to the resource.

LIS and our vendors are working to configure direct access from the new campus network address space, and we will remove the proxy login step as soon as all arrangements are complete.

A short outage in our internet connectivity was inadvertently caused this morning as we were working to increase our internet bandwidth. This problem has been corrected and no further outages are expected.

The students.luther.edu hardware/software upgrade is complete. The upgrade provides faster network connectivity and fixes minor compatibility issues with Windows Vista.

KATIE will be unavailable for use on Wednesday, August 13 from approximately 12:01 AM to 8:00 AM. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

Students.luther.edu will be unavailable for several days due to a hardware upgrade that must be completed before the start of the 2008-2009 academic year. File services will be stopped on August 12th at 1:00 pm to allow for a full backup that must be completed before the hardware upgrade can begin.

Facilities Management is planning a power outage at 7:30AM on 8/11/08 for the following buildings: Regents Center, Sampson Hoffland, Center for the Arts, Ylvisaker, Miller/Dieseth and Farwell. Since our network equipment will not have power, the network in these buildings will also be down at that time.

In addition, though the power will be up, the network in Campus House, Koren, Jensen, and Baker Village will also be down, becase it is serviced by buildings that will be without power.
