Service Interruptions

Our Sympa mailing list server started acting up recently, with users reporting that it wasn’t sending out messages properly. I attempted to reboot it, and found that that was just the first sign of hardware failure on the server, and it would no longer boot.

I’ve fixed the hardware problem and the server is now back up and operating properly.

Google has failed to update the security certificate for their smtp server. This is causing problems for users that have switched to Norse Mail, and are using Thunderbird to access their mail. If you try to send a e-mail message and get the error “smtp.gmail.com is a site that uses a security certificate to encrypt data during transmission, but its certificate expired on 7/29/2008 11:58 AM”, the work-around is to click the “continue” button to send a message anyway.

We’re assured that Google engineers are working to fix this problem.

There were several short network outages in Valders this morning. The outages were cause by construction crews working on renovating part of the building. Several times they tripped the breaker that provides power to the main network switch that serves the Valders network. The problem has been corrected, and I hope it won’t happen again.

The Campus Manager upgrade planned for this morning (7/10/08) at 7:00AM has been delayed until Monday morning (7/14/08) at 7AM. This will cause a short outage of network service on our DSL network (Towers, Student Appartment, and Prarie Houses) and for the campus wireless network.

Network shares, home directories, and personal webpages served by academic.luther.edu and admin1.luther.edu are once again available. Off-campus access to home directories through SCP is still unavailable.

scp access to file servers (students, academic, and admin1) and ssh access to knuth are currently not available from off campus. We hope to restore off campus access to these services soon.

This morning at about 8:00AM network service became very slow. This slowness effected both users on campus and off campus trying to access resources hosted on Luther servers. This problem has now been corrected.

LIS will be performing unplanned maintenance on the admin1 and academic file servers today. Network drives, home directories, and personal webpages served by these two servers are currently unavailable and will remain unavailable until the maintenance is completed. Service is expected to be restored sometime on July 5.
