Library of Congress Junior Fellows Program

The Library of Congress has put out a call for applications for their Junior Fellows program. The summer program is open to undergraduates and graduate students.

I would recommend that you share this with students that you think may be interested. It is a very prestigious program and can be an exciting internship experience for those who are interested in the information field.

January Term and Spring Term 2013 Registration Dates

The student registration dates for J-term and Spring 2013 will be Thursday November 1, Tuesday through Thursday November 6, 7, and 8, Tuesday through Thursday November 13,14, and 15, of 2012 with times scheduled from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. each evening.

Students will be getting their registration time from their advisor and should check their registration clearance on my.luther.edu prior to their registration time.

IKON Survey Response

Last fall, our vendor providing document and mail center services conducted a quality of service survey at Luther gauging opinions of the document center, our online document submissions system Trac, the mail center, and support of local copiers and printers.

Farewell for Lucas Welper on Tuesday, March 20th, from 2:30 - 4 p.m.

Lucas Welper has accepted a programmer analyst position with Mayo Clinic in Rochester and his last day at Luther will be March 21st. We appreciate Lucas’ great contributions to the Software Development team and wish him well in his new position.

A farewell party for Lucas is planned for Tuesday, March 20th from 2:30 – 4 p.m. in Main 12.

The Luther community is invited to thank him for the great programming work that he has done for LIS and our users since he started at Luther in 2008. His wife Sarah and new baby Haylie plan to attend.

On Tuesday, February 7th Preus Library will be joining with various organizations around the world in celebrating the 200th birthday of celebrated author Charles Dickens. As part of this celebration we are mounting a parody of Dicken’s famous work A Christmas Carol to be performed that afternoon.

Theft and loss of laptops is currently estimated to be more than 85,000 per year and rising dramatically 1. The incidence level is highest among research and education than in other industries 2. The recent report of Warren Country Community College exemplifies the problem of having confidential student data leaving campus on laptops — over 5,000 current and former students were in danger of experiencing identity theft with the college endangered by endless litigation.

Stats Comparing Ebook Use in Public & Academic Libraries

The October edition of Library Journal featured LJ’s second annual survey regarding the use of ebooks in public and academic libraries. Many are citing this survey to show to dramatic increase in ebook purchases and circulation and to reinforce the idea the ebooks are the future of libraries; however, I am most interested in the disparity between public and academic libraries in this field.

Google has rather recently released “Appointment Slots” which makes this and many other rigorous, repetitive “scheduling” tasks quite easy.
