One Laptop Per Child Update -- The KATIE Connection

Not hearing much about One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)? They are going strong with major support from AMD, Brightstar, Chi Lin, eBay, Google, Marvell, NewsCorp, Nortel, Quanta, Red Hat, SES Astra. Hundreds of thousands of laptops have already been provided and the second iteration of “Give One Get One” program is underway through Amazon. The OLPC XS server has just been released with Moodle (KATIE) providing core services for education, collaboration, communication and publishing.

Facilities Management launches new work order tracking system

Facilities Management is now using a new system to allow campus users to submit and track requests for facilities services. The new web-base request submittal form allows the requester to identify the location and type of work being requested.

You can make a request by entering your email address on the form at fixit.luther.edu The first time you use fixit you will be asked to complete information such as your name and phone number.

The past few days I’ve found myself grumbling about why a couple of websites weren’t showing information in the way I wanted to see it. After some digging around, I discovered that the information I wanted was buried in the code of both of these pages, in one way or another, but wasn’t visible from the browser!

So, in a fit of frustration, I decided I was going to teach myself how to write a Greasemonkey script.

10 New Projectors installed in Luther Classrooms

10 new Sharp PG-F310X 3000 lumen projectors have been installed in current Luther College Multi-Media Classrooms.

This is part of our yearly maintenance efforts to keep the Classroom Technology current and effective.

New Circulation Desk Equipment

Academic Technology is placing 7 new camcorders in service at our Library Circulation Desk for checkout, 6 of them are the Canon FS10 and 1 is a Canon VIXIA HF 10. All of them use removable 16GB SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) flash memory cards. They are all digital with the VIXIA also being High Definition. We have also purchased memory card readers for the removable SDHC cards for ease of removing your pictures and movies without the need of the camcorder itself. Some of these camcorders are at the Circ Desk now for check out.

CLIR Announces Draft RFP for Hidden Collections Grants

From CLIR:

A draft request for proposals (RFP) is now available for CLIR's new national program to identify and catalog hidden special collections and archives. The draft RFP is intended to help applicants plan their grant request; however, it is not to be used for submissions. Applications will be accepted only in electronic form, via an online application tool that will be activated in late June.

Doug Plummer's photographs

Photographer Doug Plummer from Seattle was on campus last week taking photographs for Admissions. He has posted a nice entry on his blog about his visit. He also attended the Foot-Notes dance at the Highlandville school house on Saturday night and took lots of pictures, including shots of at least one LIS employee, one LIS student worker and one spouse of a former LIS employee.
