Google has recently opened up a beta version of a new communication platform, called Wave, which serves as a mash-up of email, discussion forums, and real-time chat. Accounts are available by invitation only, and I have a number of invitations I’d like to offer up to members of the Luther community (students, faculty, staff). If you are interested, contact me directly, or send a note via the “Contact Us” link to the right.

For the past two and a half days I’ve been hiding away in Olin 301 with a number of other colleagues from LIS and other departments around the college, attending the EDUCAUSE 2009 conference virtually.

This marks the first time I’ve attended a multi-day/multi-session event online, and have to pass on major kudos to EDUCAUSE for giving us the opportunity to attend locally, and for pulling it off with only a very few hitches.

Jane gathered reports from everyone about the status of lost books and their replacements.

Lindy brought a request to purchase the Encyclopedia of Communication Theory and the group agreed to purchase the print edition.

Andi & Germano led a spirited discussion of research modules and topics for the Paideia I research paper.

Jane informed the group that the staffing plan is in transition and will be discussed further at a future meeting.

Headline of the Week: Library Renovations: Phases Two and Three

This past summer, LIS completed work on Phase One of a multi-phase project to reconfigure space on the main floor of Preus Library. Visitors to the library this fall found a relocated Technology Help Desk directly opposite the main library entrance and co-located with our Research Help desk. Late in September, Luther’s Writing Center moved from the lower floor of the library to be adjacent to the new Technology Help Desk Call Center, our main library computer lab, as well as our technology and research help desks.

In the coming week, LIS will launch a recruitment for a Web Programmer/Analyst on the Application Development team. Full information regarding the recruitment is available on the LIS Recruiting website. Anyone with questions regarding the recruitment or interest in the position should talk with myself or Marcia Gullickson. Further updates on the recruitment will be shared as they are available.

A new painting by Fridtjof Schroder (1917-1990), LC alumnus of 1943, has been donated by a family member. Many of Schroder’s colorful, abstract paintings can be seen around campus but a comprehensive collection is installed in Hovde. He also drew the wonderful pencil and charcoal drawing of the shell of Old Main as viewed the morning after it burned. That drawing hangs in the display case on the main floor of Main. The new painting, entitled “Opus 325: The Mystery,” is a self-portrait of the artist created while he was contemplating retirement.

A new significant artists’ book by Christine Kermaire of Belgium has been cataloged for Special Collections in Preus Library. It consists of a textile panel (42 × 62 cm.) with 2 grommets at the top for hanging and velcro strips at the bottom. It includes four 22 × 31 cm. laminated cards (description of cemetery, layout of cemetery, two pictures of shadow of monuments on grass in cemetery) with velcro tabs at the top so that they may be hung from the bottom of the textile panel.
