E-Reading Activities in J-Term

During J-Term 2013, LIS invites members of the Luther community to explore the boundaries and freedom of e-reading through a variety of activities, including:

  • Workshops: All workshops will consist of a demonstration/presentation of approximately 30 minutes followed by open time for people to ask questions, try out different e-readers and applications, and receive one-on-one assistance from LIS staff. If participants have e-readers or tablets, they are encouraged to bring them. See the LIS Training Schedule for dates, times, and locations.

Wireless Trouble solved

Update 6:43PM Wireless service is now restored in Baker Village Lillehammer.

Update: 5:29PM After quite a few hours on the phone with HP tech support, all access points are running properly with the new firmware. The only exception is Lillehammer in Baker Village which still hasn’t become active yet. I will work to solve that issue next.

6:55AM: After attempting to upgrade the firmware on our wireless controllers this morning, I’m unable to bring back up approximately 1/3 of our access points. I will need to contact HP tech support for advice on how to resolve the issue.

Library of Congress Junior Fellows Program

The Library of Congress has put out a call for applications for their Junior Fellows program. The summer program is open to undergraduates and graduate students.

I would recommend that you share this with students that you think may be interested. It is a very prestigious program and can be an exciting internship experience for those who are interested in the information field.

Tungle.Me Shut Down

The scheduling app Tungle.me shut down on December 3rd, 2012. Tungle was a feature of Norse Apps that allowed users to schedule meetings with colleagues and friends. The company was purchased by RIM (Blackberry) and is incorporating their product into the next Blackberry platform.

For more information, visit http://www.tungle.me/blog.html

Those who have used Tungle.Me have several alternatives available as a replacement:

Wireless Firmware Upgrade Early Morning of 12/19/12

I am planning to upgrade the firmware on the controllers that serve the majority of our wireless network during the regular Thursday morning maintenance window. I will plan to begin the upgrade at approximately 5:30AM, and during the process there will be several short interruptions to wireless service. Tthis work will affect all of the campus wireless network EXCEPT Sampson, Valders, Main, Miller, Dieseth and Olson. It is my intention to ensure that the system is fully functional prior to 7:30AM.

Hardware Repair at the Technology Help Desk

One of the services offered by the Technology Help Desk is Hardware Repair for personal computers. This is offered free to students* and is often a lifeline for someone whose computer has suffered a catastrophic failure.

During the Fall 2012 semester, we accepted and repaired over 132 computers. In comparison, we repaired 106 in Fall 2011.

Hardware Repair includes everything from removing viruses, recovering lost data, reinstalling operating systems, installing hard drives or memory, or replacing entire screens on laptops.

This Week in LIS - 14 December 2012

Headline of the Week: Introductory Textbooks Nearly Free?

The Management Information Systems text available through Flat World Knowledge (FWK) is great in my opinion. When I used it in my classes the online version was free and for a modest fee (relative to the cost of new traditional textbook) one could download and print a copy and FWK would print a black and white copy and send it to you for a bit more and for a bit more than that they’d print and send you a full color copy. Recently they removed the free online text option.
