Printing

GoPrint

GoPrint is the print management solution being deployed by LIS in 2009. It allows us to more accurately track individual usage and allocate costs in providing print services on campus. GoPrint is part of our effort to help cut down on waste and encourage better management of printing resources.

Luther students are given an allowance of 400 pages ($20.00) of printing for Fall and Spring semesters and 100 pages ($5.00) for the J-Term semester. Printing is tracked by the student’s Norse Key.

Video Projectors

Many of Luther’s classrooms are equipped video projectors for showing movies, presentations, and web sites. Projector bulbs cost $350 to $550, so it’s important to make them last as long as possible. This can be done by simply turning off projectors when they are not in use.

Some of the newer projectors have timers, but they aren’t set because they would shut off too often during class. Classroom control systems make it easier to turn projectors on and off and do help alleviate this problem.

The best practice is to turn off the projector when you are done with it.

Monitors

Power Settings

Power settings for monitors can be set via the procedure for computers described on the previous page. It doesn’t take much energy to power up a monitor, and the Department of Energy recommends that you turn off your monitor manually or automatically if you will be away from your computer for more than twenty minutes.

CRTs and LCDs

The two main types of computer monitors in use today are cathode ray tube (CRT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors. It used to be the case that CRTs displayed better colors, refreshed faster, and cost less than LCDs.

Sleep Mode

Sleep mode is a low-power mode for computers and other electronic devices. It is sometimes referred to as “Suspend” or “Stand By”. When in sleep mode, power is cut to all non-essential computer functions.

This Week in LIS - 9 October 2009

Headline of the Week: TWILIS Reimagined

Subscribers of TWILIS will recall we’ve conducted a brief survey over the past couple weeks to determine the parts of the newsletter that work particularly well, and areas where we could improve. Thanks to everyone who has offered their thoughts. This week I thought I’d share some of the collective wisdom and some thoughts on changes we’ll make in response now and in the coming weeks.

As of this afternoon, thirty-nine individuals have responded to the survey.
