Headline of the Week: Phishing and Norse Key Security

Yesterday, LIS again reminded the campus community about the dangers of sharing account information via email, as well as the fact that LIS staff will never ask for passwords via email at any time. This is a message we regularly try to reinforce with the community and with the increased sophistication of phishing attempts, it gets more difficult to make it clear. Each round there are a few folks who do reply back the phishers with their credentials.

Headline of the Week: Time to Move

If you’ve been holding out to switch to Norse Apps for email and calendaring, the time to move has come. Luther’s deployment of Norse Apps began this spring with the full migration of our students prior to the summer. The Class of 2012 began their Luther lives on Norse mail this fall. During the summer, LIS invited alumni using Luther email forwarding a migration path to Norse Apps. All the while, employees have had the option to move when it most suited them, and many have moved.

Headline of the Week: MISO Survey Symposium 2008

This past Monday the annual symposium covering the MISO (Merged Information Services Organization) Survey was held in Orlando. The meeting included an update on the survey and where it is headed as an assessment tool and also reviewed the most recent research into the national data derived from the survey. For the first time this past year, some participating schools had administered the survey twice, allowing for the first true longitudinal data. There were some broad strokes present and interesting sidelights covered.

Headline of the Week: New Arrivals in LIS: Library Furniture and iTunes U

Earlier this week, LIS took delivery of some new furniture for our casual seating areas on the main floor of the library. The new chairs, tables, and other pieces replace a variety of furniture, some of which dated to the opening of the Preus Library facility nearly 40 years ago. We have been able to purchase these items through recent gifts from the Preus family and other matching funds made available for this purpose.

Headline of the Week: Next Steps for Printing and Copying

Earlier this afternoon, President Torgerson announced a new managed services agreement with IKON Office Solutions. This is a significant step by Luther to think about our printing and copying in a strategic way. Luther has nearly 400 devices for printing, copying, and faxing scattered across the campus generating nearly 1 million copies per month.

Headline of the Week: Improving the Process: Welcoming New Community Members

Devoted TWILIS readers will recall discussion from last summer of LIS plan to begin looking at internal work processes with the goal of significant improvement in efficiency and quality of output. This project has grown out of Luther’s relationship with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and learning more about their process improvement activities. Much of the work within any business process often adds little or no value to the end product.

Headline of the Week: LIS Recruiting Season

As folks in LIS are aware, we are approaching the final review portions of our current recruitments for a Help Desk Specialist and Programmer Analyst. I always find a recruitment to be one of the more interesting we do, especially given all the interesting and good people we have the opportunity to meet and get to know. Would that we could hire more of the ones we find! Recruiting is also a process that takes time and deliberation.

Headline of the Week: A Dashboard is Born

If you close your eyes and imagine yourself driving a favorite car down the highway (or if you’re an aviator, you can fly your favorite plane), think about how much you rely upon your instruments for guidance and what life would be like navigating without any instruments at all. Without out a gas gauge you don’t really know when you need to refuel. (The sputtering might give you a clue, but not really when it would be most useful).
